It's been another very hot day, even with the Jalousien blinds down there is no escape. I spent the morning preparing my talk and PP presentation. I am short of photos of the Bath end of the canal, and have had to resort to taking photos of photos. The picture left shows the cover of the Summer 2011 "Butty" the magazine of the "Kennet & Avon Canal." The photo shows Cleveland House, the original headquarters of the K&A Canal Company. The house was built over the canal and forms a tunnel. The towpath passes under the house, and in the roof of the tunnel is a trap door where it was possible for the K&A Company clerks to drop documents to the bargees who passed by underneath on their barges. It is a beautiful house and is now a Grade 11 listed building that houses modern offices.
I had tea with friends and the three children in Bortfeld this afternoon. We sat in the garden and ate chunks of fruit cake and drank English tea. Later we watched the children swimming in the pool and a good time was had by all. It is still very hot, the sky is grey and a storm is threatening. I wish some freshening rain would fall.
